The Resident wins New City Award 2002 De Resident, bordered by the Zwarte Weg, Turfmarkt and Fluwelen Burgwal, was awarded the 2002 Nieuwe Stad, or New City, award. The public award went to De Jutter, a psychiatric facility for children and young adults. De Windvang, a recreational facility on the Haringkade/Badhuisweg in Scheveningen, won the small-scale project prize. Chairman Hilhorst of the urban planning, development and housing executive department awarded the prizes on Friday, 29 November. De Resident received a cash prize of €10,000. De Jutter and De Windvang each received €5,000. According to the jury, De Resident signals an important turning point in The Hague’s downtown development. De Resident is a colourful and defining element in the city’s skyline and an area of which The Hague and all its residents can be proud. During the awards ceremony Chairman Hilhorst suggested setting aside the Nieuwe Stad prize money for increasing the area’s appeal and accessiblity. Other nominated projects included De Jutter, a psychiatric facility for children and young adults, the Zonne Veld residential area, the Huijgenspark renovations, the Zieken buildings and Huijgenspark, which features residential and office space. Public prize A prize for small-scale projects was awarded for the first time. Often these projects are overshadowed by larger, higher profile endeavours, yet they can significantly influence the immediate surroundings and cultivate a strong sense of involvement among nearby residents or users. Given the choice among three nominated projects (the Oranjeplein administrative building, the Ammunitiehof and De Windvang recreational area), the jury selected De Windvang for its unconventional design and process in which an initially unwelcome skating track ultimately became the park’s leading feature.
