‘The well’ has been sunk into the Parnassusplein.
Initially, the only thing visible in the square is a steel
grate. The artwork is found under this. The sculpture
is of an iron man in a circular pit looking upwards.
Antony Gormeley laboured to interfere as little as
possible in the square's layout. The Parnassusplein
is flanked by the buildings of the Ministry and has
been planted with seventeen trees.
The artwork is intended to change the perception of
the visitor to the square. The visitor is invited to
look into the pit instead of looking upwards. This glance
is answered by the iron man.
